City
of Miami PAD Program
Over 400,000 people die each year due to sudden
cardiac arrest. Most are due to irregular heart
rhythms called arrhythmias. Ventricular
Fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia that
causes cardiac arrest. Death follows within
minutes without defibrillation or proper CPR.
Defibrillation is the only known therapy for
Ventricular Fibrillation of the heart. This
technique of giving electrical shock can restore
the normal heart rhythm if it is done within
minutes of the arrest.
Traditionally the ability to defibrillate was
purely on the hands of Emergency Medical
Personnel. Even in the best of EMS systems, the
ability of a trained person to arrive in time to
defibrillate a victim was not very good. Today
new generations of defibrillators called (AED’s)
Automatic External Defibrillators, make it
possible for anyone to deliver defibrillation.
These units are light weight, effective, require
low maintenance and are easy to use. Having CPR
trained lay persons equipped with AED’s will
save precious minutes and improve survival
rates.
The City of Miami Fire Rescue Department has
taken the initiative of establishing an AED PAD
Program (Team for Life) in order to improve
survival rates of those who suffer a cardiac
arrest.
Team for Life will network with government
organizations, private organizations and
citizens to increase survivability by providing:
awareness, training, management and oversight in
a Public Access Defibrillation.
Participants in the Team for Life program will
receive a two year certification in an American
Heart (Heart Saver) Course. Recertification
would be needed at the end of the two year
period.
Many businesses have already taken advantage of
the training and equipment. Training has been
ongoing and will continue to accelerate in these
locations.
In order for the success of this program, it
will be necessary to deploy these units through
our community. The initial cost of the units can
be burdensome on some of our low income or non
for profit businesses. The objective is to seek
out the locations and approach them with the
benefits of early defibrillation.
The Team for Life program has the facilities
available to train a large amount of personnel.
Our training center is properly equipped for
this training. The program will also train
personnel at their work location or home. The
PAD Program will ensure the proper placement,
training and maintenance of these life saving
devices.
