The Building Department serves to protect the
health, safety and welfare of the public; and to
enhance the general quality of life through
interpretation and enforcement of the Florida Building Code, as well as other
applicable regulations governing construction
and land use.
The department accomplishes the above function
with the following Divisions: Administration -
Inspection Services - Code Administration
Administration Division:
The Administration Division is responsible for
policy formulation and decision making; as well
as preparation and maintenance of the budget,
the monitoring of revenues, personnel activities
and the issuance of all certificates. This
division also works closely with the
construction industry, citizen groups,
professional organizations and other government
agencies in developing long and short range
plans for the department.
Inspection Services Division:
The Inspection Services Division is responsible
for the protection of life and property from
safety hazards related to buildings and their
construction. The division is responsible for
the interpretation and enforcement of City,
County, State and Federal regulations pertaining
to construction of buildings with regard to the
review of plans. Inspections and enforcement, as
required by The Florida Building Code is
performed by the Structural, Electrical,
Mechanical and Plumbing Sections of this
Division. The Inspection Services Division also
follows up on compliance for unsafe structures
by taking cases before the Metro-Dade Unsafe
Structures Board. Cases are also prepared and
presented before the Construction Trade
Qualifying Board.
Code Administration Division:
The Code Administration Division is responsible
for the issuance of permits, the assessment of
permit fees, the control and maintenance of
departmental records, and supplying record
information to the public via file searches and
subpoenas. The division enforces all State
regulations applicable in the microfilming,
maintenance and destruction of plans and
permits.
