Focus on Fitness to Prevent Gun Violence in Overtown

(Miami, FL November 7 , 2016) - The Fit Zone Fitness and Wellness Series, displacing gun violence with community engagement in Overtown, continues at Henry Reeves Park, 600 NW 10th Street, tonight at 6pm. This is the second of five Monday evenings with a variety of activities including basketball tournaments, boot camps and walk/run groups. Over 100 Overtown residents partook in the first event two weeks ago.

The goal is to bring together residents from the community with members of the City's Police and Fire Departments.

ShotSpotter technology from the Police Department helped pinpoint this as an area of high gun activity. The series was conceived by Commissioner Francis Suarez alongside community stakeholders to promote fitness and wellness as an alternative to violence.

"Gun violence, especially among our youth, is one of the most important issues to our residents. That is one of the reasons why I am excited to work alongside our Police and Fire Departments, as well as others dedicated to improving the quality of life for our Overtown community, by bringing this Fit Zone Series to our residents," said Commissioner Suarez. "Together, we can change the narrative from one of violence and crime to one of safety and creating a positive environment for all, including our children."
