-NEW APPOINTEE BRINGS OVER 15 YEARS OF MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE-

Miami, Florida—Chief Administrator Joe Arriola continues to appoint key personnel to the City Administration by naming Jorge Cano, P.E., an operations executive with over 15 years of management experience in business and utility operations and an engineering background, for the position of Director of the recently established Department of Capital Improvements. The Department of Capital Improvements was established as a result of the re-engineering plans for the City as proposed by Mayor Manny Diaz.
Mr. Jorge Cano has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Miami and a Master of Science in Environmental and Urban Systems from Florida International University. He has participated in the U.S. Government Executive Program at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C., the Industrial Marketing Executive Program at Virginia University Graduate Business School and the Sales Management Executive Program at Columbia University Graduate Business School.

Until recently, Mr. Cano was a business and project manager for United Petroleum Corporation, a public company with operating subsidiaries in five states, annual revenues in excess of $150 million and 650 employees. Contracted by the board of directors of UPC, he restructured operations and provided an evaluation of strategic options. Mr. Cano as President, Secretary and Director for UPC significantly reduced expenses, improved cash flow and facilitated positive interaction among managers, suppliers, consultants, shareholders and employees.

Until 1995, he held different positions for Florida Power and Light Company. He directed activities of 150 employees in departments that included construction coordination, customer service and sales, street light maintenance, meter reading, collections and payment processing. Mr. Cano was a member of the corporate team that won the very prestigious Japan’s Deming Prize in Total Quality Management.
